“No Nonsense Approach to Weight Maintenance”
Weight loss is hard; Keeping it off may be even more challenging. I’m sure it depends on who you ask, but many would suggest that keeping the weight off is more difficult than losing the weight. In fact, some experts believe that weight loss and weight maintenance should be treated as separate issues. Several months ago, a study came out that showed most all of the contestants on The Biggest Loser had regained their weight back. This is heartbreaking, but I don’t think anyone is surprised given the unrealistic setting. It still leaves us all with this question: “How do I lose weight and keep it off?” Sometimes permanent weight loss seems elusive.

The answer is that there is no one magical answer, but what we can confidently say is that losing weight and keeping it off requires a complete lifestyle overhaul. Or to put it another way, it’s not so much about losing weight as it is about losing the mentality and lifestyle that goes along with that. It’s part nutrition and part exercise, but the largest determinant of success hinges on how well a person can manage their social and environmental situations.

If you have struggled with weight loss and maintenance, no one has to tell you that the challenges run deep. You know how hard it is to navigate social or family gatherings and thats mostly what we discussed yesterday. With out being able to pinpoint the exact problem, you feel that your goals are mismatched for the environment that you live in and you would be correct. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, if will require great determination and you will be going against the grain, so to speak, but the payoff is huge. If you want to know how people lose weight and keep it off, you can go to the national weight control registry website, but I can summarize if for you here. Most them have:

-Modified their eating habits
-Adopted Low cal/Low diets (more veggies, fiber, and lean proteins, etc.)
-exercised about 1 hour daily
-watched less than 10 hours of TV per week (probably median screen time too)
-weight themselves regularly (weekly)

Pretty straightforward until you realize how challenging it is to do the first 4 bullets on that list. None of us live in a bubble. We have families and friends and environments that make these simple changes challenging.

It all comes down to HABITS and REWARDS. Is the life you gain from losing weight worth the sacrifice? Eating and drinking and binge watching episodes on Netflix provides for some really powerful instant rewards, but it’s temporary. On the other hand, exercise, quality nutrition and taking charge of your health provides more long-term, but permanent rewards. Here are some other rewards mentioned yesterday.

-more energy
-mental clarity
-Feeling confident
-Feeling good in clothes
-Long life
-Quality of Life
-Cost saving (clothes are cheaper, getting off of medications)
-Getting off of BP and diabetes meds
-Greater mobility
-Less joint pain
-Better sleep
-Better marriage
-no food comas
-less guilt/shame

The list goes on. So as you’re moving along in your health and weight loss journey, make sure to connect with the benefits and rewards of why you are doing it. At the end of the days, months and years, the number on the scale may not be a huge motivator. You have to fall in love with the new life you are creating. Otherwise, you will always long to return to what is comfortable. As always, I’m inspired daily by you all who work so hard and I’m proud because you show others that it can be done.
